Salt and Pepper Fish Goujons

These spicy Chinese style goujons are the perfect fakeaway meal when you can't decide between Chinese food or fish and chips


Serves 4


Step 1
Chop the onion, pepper, chilli, ginger and garlic
Step 2
Add the chopped vegetables into a bowl, then add Chinese 5 spice, salt, black pepper and toss
Step 3
Plat the cod fillets dry with kitchen roll, then cut into strips
Step 4
Place the cod strips back onto the kitchen paper and pat dry again
Step 5
Add 50g self raising flour to one bowl and 100g in another bowl. Add custard powder or cornflour to the bowl with 100g
Step 6
Whisk the custard powder and flour together and slowly pour in 250ml ice cold water whilst gently mixing
Step 7
Coat the goujons in plain flour. Tap off the excess and dip in the batter
Step 8
Heat a large pot of oil to about 170ยบC, then add the fish and allow to fry until golden brown and crispy
Step 9
In the meantime, heat 2tbsp vegetable oil in a separate pan and add the chopped vegetables to fry until softened
Step 10
Remove the cod from the pot and drain on a wire rack. Once the onions are soft in the pan, turn the heat off
Step 11
Add the cod to the vegetables and mix well. Once well coated in the seasoning, serve and enjoy!
